I am getting lots of emails from post that I commented on that now have this crazy Chinese (?) messages. I believe others have been spammed too because I am getting it from other blogs. It is by "Sexy" You might want to turn on the comment moderating.Megan Germanohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07786949483938731951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3205538229281562484.post-86512864782599583382009-03-04T06:57:00.000-05:002009-03-04T06:57:00.000-05:00DARN! Wilson (feels odd to write that) was my rhetoric teacher last year, and there's one thing that you did forget to ask him about: bugs.

As our rhetoric teacher, he taught us to love what we spoke about, for "love bestows loveliness," and to learn as much as we could about everything, so that we would be copious, and would have a wide foundation upon which to build. Mostly, he taught us about bugs, and the mating habits of slugs. And leeches: South American leeches that crawl into your sinus cavities and end up dangling out of your nose in restaurants, eliciting emotional responses from excitable waitresses. And two-foot-long caterpillars that dangle from the roofs of caves to catch bats. It was a fun class, and his stories were the best part.

My favorite story of his took place when he and his son Rory were out doing some minor landscaping before mowing the lawn. He moved a rock, and saw ants just going crazy underneath it, as they are wont to do when their rocks get moved. He apologized, but informed them of the hard truth: he cared more about his lawn than their entire existence. Then he went on his way.

A few minutes later, he noticed Rory taking an unusual level of interest in the now rock-less anthill, went to check it out, and saw earwigs everywhere, being rounded up, herded and ritualistically dismembered by the ants.

He commented that, to the ants, the world was disintegrating: the rock had been there time out of mind, ages before they existed, and it was now inexplicably gone. This was the apocalypse. Life as they had known it was ended, a new age had begun. So, what do you do in the apocalypse? You appease the gods that you have unwittingly offended. Everybody knows that. Or at least they used to. And what do the gods want? They want sacrifice. In this case, they want earwigs.

Rhetoric really was a fun class.J. A.
